How can I stop mice getting into my (robovski) hamster's cage? I can't change the location!?

I keep finding mice/baby rats in my hamsters cage, any idea what I can put outside the cage to deter them (and not kill the hamster)! The cage is in the garage and I cannot move it, and I don't want to suffocate my poor hamster with blankets!!!
