How to manipulate flash for fashion pics?

I am not an expert, but my daughter recently had fashion photos taken by an expert and I think there is a strong front lighting source shining on them and framing them, while there is almost mo lighting from behind. That is all I can tell you, except the lighting seems to be at waist height.
