Why did Reagan & Bush 41 sell arms and go to great lenghts to befriend Saddam Hussien ?

The reasoning back then was that it was better to back Iraq and keep Iran bogged down so as not to spread the Islamic Revolution started in 1978. Most governments will support a nation fighting one of their enemies, though it really isn't the wisest approach.
